Exhibition: A World of Questions | Posters on the human condition

Bertrand Russell once said “In all affairs it’s a healthy thing now and then to hang a question mark on the things you have long taken for granted.” Chaz Maviyane-Davies would go further and say “I believe we should question things daily”.

Nevertheless, if we can’t hang a question mark on the things we take for granted, then perhaps art and design can. It has potential to stir us into action and out of indifference and positively impact our complacency.

As artists, we get to ask the questions even though we might never find the answers. Graphic design’s ability to utilize image and text to encourage us to see things in a new way is unsurpassed when it hits its mark. In modern cultures dominated by market forces, it is more important than ever to use design to challenge us and move art, beauty and ideas to the foreground.

Envisioning Russell’s quote, A World of Questions is a new collection of posters that Chaz Maviyane-Davies designed to embody what Russell had in mind. This series of posters have been compiled into a tabloid-sized book of the same name and will be available in April 2015.

Subjects within the exhibition include: the environment, corruption, assassination, climate change, consumerism, dissent, disability, debt, the death penalty, the economy, ecocide, endangered species, energy, fast food, fossil fuels, gender, guns, genocide, human rights, health, inequality, technology, labor, culture, nuclear disarmament, philosophy, peace, pollution, privacy, racism, religion, recycling, social media, values, vanishing resources, water and war amongst many others.
