Gamma, a.k.a. Jam Jam is a graphic designer, amateur photographer, illustrator, and screen printer who lives in the tourist city of Oaxaca, México. He is a 30 year old, skinhead; a lover of vintage design.
Gamma Jam Jam career as an illustrator began three years ago with a project called Jam Jam. He began printing T-shirts and small flyers for local concerts, then, in 2010, his work took a giant leap by ending up designing the posters for a show called “We Shall Overcome” where the artist, Stranger Cole, played and also the largest collector of Jamaican music, Tommy Rock A Shaka. He also screen printed the tickets for the show.
The posters were created based on vintage design, music, fashion, movies, social, and political events from the ‘50s and ‘60s. He always add Jamaican touches such as famous faces of the time, things like scooters, and the distinct clothing styles. Many readers notice the details of his own style in his posters, the typography to illustrate those using songs, poems or phrases that go hand-in-hand with the general concept. One example is used in the work he has done for Millie Small, people can notice that the lyrics of the song „My Boy Lollipop“ are drawn on her arms. For Stranger Cole, some well-known ska phrases were put on his beret.
In Gamma’s last work in Chicago, the icon song titled, “Reggae From The Ghetto”, was drawn on the girl‘s hair. What he likes the most about these posters are the vintage colors. Jam Jam always include in his work, something that results, undoubtedly, in some happy observers.
