In the wake of the 1st successful Visual Communication Designers’ Meeting, we continue actively for achieving the objectives and the goals that we set from the beginning by organising the Graphic Stories Cyprus 2016.

The Graphic Stories Cyprus aims at cultivating an artistic education and in the development of critical awareness about contemporary graphic arts and other related issues on local and international level. It also aims to promote and make people aware of the Cyprus visual communication and creativity in Cyprus and abroad and encourage the network with foreign cultural institutions, bodies and art groups. The Graphic Stories Cyprus aspires to become an annual occasion for interaction between Cypriot and foreign designers and also a reference point in the field of visual communication in Cyprus and in the broader region of the eastern Mediterranean. Exhibitions, conferences and workshops are held to demonstrate and promote the value of visual communication to the public and its interface with what is happening in the society. Furthermore, the implementation of the above actions aims on cultivating professional empathy between the visual communication designers in Cyprus and on contributing in the creation of culture and values.

The idea of organizing a meeting of Visual Communication Designers in Cyprus, under the name of “Graphic Stories Cyprus” continues for by renewing the appointment of creative professionals for three days (26 to 28 February 2016). This second “edition” of the Graphic Stories Cyprus includes exhibitions, lectures and workshops by renowned professionals in the field of visual communication.

EXHIBITIONS

The creative weekend starts on Friday, the 26th of February with the inauguration of the exhibition of the International Reggae Poster Contest that includes 80 posters and will be hosted for the second time on the island, on the ground floor of the newspaper “Politis”. The yearly competition involves designers from all over the world including Cyprus. The competition aims to promote Reggae music and support the Alpha Boys School. The program includes a special lecture by Cypriot Dub Poet and Associate Professor at the Communications Department of the University of Nicosia, Haji Mike, entitled “Journey – Reggae – Jamaica – United Kingdom – Cyprus”. The exhibition will be accompanied by a Reggae party with the participation of Roots Crew Sound System. The Roots Crew Sound System, influenced by the underground Reggae music scene sound systems of the 90 in London, promote this culture of music on the island since 2000. The main feature is the presentation of music in a unique way through the handmade audio system following this tradition. The inauguration on the 26th of February and the party will be broadcast live from the site Cyprus Dub Community Radio (audio and video).

A second poster exhibition by the Adult Congenital Heart Defects Association Cyprus, ACHDAC, is also included in the program of Graphic Stories Cyprus. The exhibition, hosted under the auspices of the Municipality of Nicosia in the area of Famagusta Gate this time, concerns 35 posters, the same as the number of congenital heart diseases. The exhibition will be presented on Saturday, the 27th of February at the closing of the GSC lectures, and it will be introduced by the chairman of the association Mrs. Katerina Papadopoulou. The exhibition is presented on the occasion of the 10 years activity of the association in Cyprus.

LECTURES

The second Graphic Stories Cyprus will host four lectures from four different aspects of Visual Communication, which are the following: semiotics, website, animation and printing. The lectures will be held on Saturday, February 27, at the Famagusta Gate in Nicosia.

Coffee, Beer or us? Evripides Zantidis, Associate Professor of Graphic Communication and Chairman at the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts of the Cyprus University of Technology seeks and analyzes the Semiotics of our National Identity in relation to the Visual Communication in print ads.

Fanos Christofi and Miltos Sergiou of eBos Technologies, highlighting the importance of the Website as a media of advertising and promotion of services and analyzing the key aspects of a harmonious completion of a website both in terms of the design and marketing.

A Letter, One Sound, One Image … A Graphic Story, the well known animator and illustrator, Aristarchos Papadaniel presents the creative process to create a … “Graphic story”, combining sounds, fonts and pictures.

Teddy Dako, trainer & printing consultant navigates exclusively the audiences of the Graphic Stories Cyprus to the print paths, “The printing path” and reminds us once again that the journey is as important as the destination, which in this case is the world of colours, the accurate colours.

Renos Demetriou, founder of the Cyprus Creative Club, will present the Cypriot Design and Advertising Awards “Pygmalion”, along with the once of the Europian competition of ADC * E (Art Directors Club Europe).

WORKSHOPS

Two very interesting workshops will take place during the Visual Communication Designers’ Meeting, Graphic Stories Cyprus 2016 – A calligraphy workshop for those who love the tradition and a workshop for creating an ePub e-book with Adobe Indesign programme for the ones who love technology.

The internationally renowned calligrapher, Georgia Angelopoulos, traveling from Canada to Cyprus to introduce to the audiences of the Graphic Stories Cyprus, the tradition of handwriting and calligraphy through a 3-day workshop titled “SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW: Rethinking Ancient Cypriot syllabary”. Calligraphy workshop will take place on the ground floor of “Politis” newspaper from 26-28 of February.

The talented designer, Nikos Gazetas, Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, using InDesign to create eBooks, ePub. On the two-day workshop will teach us how a graphic designer with a program that already knows, could design an e-book with the extension .epub which is enriched and more adaptable than a simple pdf. The workshop InDesign will take place at the Municipal Museum of Engraving “Hambis” in Nicosia on 27 and 28 February.

Maria Papaefstathiou
