The 3rd Visual Communication Designers Meeting of Cyprus, Graphic Stories Cyprus, opens its gates for another creative weekend on 10-12 March 2017. Graphic Stories Cyprus is an establishment that for the last three years has been recognised in the field of Visual communication but also in the minds of creative professionals and students in Cyprus and abroad.
Lectures
During the 3rd Edition of Graphic Stories Cyprus seven lectures will be accommodated by important creators from Cyprus and abroad, covering a wide range about Art, Visual communication and Design.
“Illustration of Cypriot traditions and fairy tales” is the title of the topic that will present the well-known engraver Hambis Tsaggaris. Paschalis Paschali, Associate Professor in the Department of Design & Multimedia at the University of Nicosia will speak about “Design Management”. “Design education in Cyprus: Expectations and challenges” is the theme of Dr. Nikos Souleles research work, an academic at the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK), which he will present. The designer, publisher and illustrator Michael Antonopoulos will explore through his speech titled “Social Media: a great career option for the graphic designer” modern business trends and prospects. The program of lectures is framed by the mentors of our three workshops , Rob Snow, the creative office Spir.To and Nikos Gazetas, with their introductory approaches in the theoretical part of the workshops that they will supervise.
The lectures will be held at the “Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation” in the “Andreas Patsalides” hall, on Friday the 10th of March 2017, starting at 16:15 and open to the public.
Workshops
Three specialized workshops will be held during this year’s Edition with the purpose to offer professional and accumulated knowledge and experience in relation to modern practices of design and Visual communication.
The renowned designer and illustrator Rob Snow will be the instructor of a two-day workshop with the theme “Illustration. The use of traditional drawing to a digital end”. The workshop will be held at the “Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation” in old Nicosia, on Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th of March 2017 during the hours 10:00-13:00 & 14:00-17:00.
The 2nd workshop is titled “Create a Brand Core Manual” and will be held from Spiros Drakatos and Tonia Avgoustaki, founders of the creative office Spir.To and will take place at the central offices of the newspaper “Politis” on Saturday the 11th of March during the hours 10:00-13:00 & 14:00-17:00.
Nikos Gazetas, visual communication designer and Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor will be the instructor of the 3rd Workshop entitled “Retouching with Adobe Photoshop beyond basics.” This workshop will be held at the central offices of the newspaper “Politis” on Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th of March 2017 during the hours 10:00-13:00 & 14:00-17:00.
Exhibitions
Nicosia, the city of Utopia
“Nicosia, the city of Utopia“, is the title of the first exhibition and will include the awarded projects that will result from the first international poster competition organized by Graphic Stories Cyprus. The exhibition will be hosted by the “Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation” in the “George and Nefeli Tziapra Pierides.” hall. The exhibition and the award of the winners will be held on Friday the 10th of March 2017, after the end of the scheduled lectures.
Sing me a Poster
The second scheduled international exhibition is about the project “Sing me a Poster” of the creative team Worldwide Graphic Designers (WGD). The exhibition will be hosted on the ground floor of the newspaper “Politis” from 11 to 27 of March 2017. The opening will take place on Saturday the 11th of March at 17:30 and will be complemented by the music of the songs visualised by the designers.
FREESTYLEE ROOTS
The third very important exhibition, which we will host, is titled “FREESTYLEE ROOTS.” It is organized by Maria Papaefstathiou and Dane Thompson in memory of the life and work of the designer Michael Thompson. The exhibition will open its doors in the hall Cine Venue of the University of Nicosia, on the 11th of March 2017 at 20:30. The exhibition will be complemented by the musical choices of Cypriot Dub Poet and Associate Professor in the Communications Department of the University of Nicosia, Haji Mike.
Graphic Stories Cyprus is under the auspices of the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus and the Nicosia Municipality and it takes place with the support and cooperation of the Bank of Cyprus, who also offers the prizes of the contest “Nicosia, the city of Utopia”, along with the Greek font company Parachute fonts.
