PRESS RELEASE

The Bee flies where it likes and gets melliferous nectar even from the most ordinary flowers. So “Golden Bee” flies for more than twenty years over all the bumps and gathers honey of the best works of diligent designers, who can extract beauty from the most ordinary objects, transforming our lives creatively.

International experts appraise unanimously the Moscow international biennale of graphic design “Golden Bee” as one of the most important events in the world professional calendar. The number of contest works, submitted to “Golden Bee 11” – about 15 000 – has beaten every record of not only previous “Golden Bee” biennales, but also of other analogous biannual exhibitions of the world. So “Golden Bee” is first of all distinguished by its wide scope. It is no coincidence, that in English edition it was named as “Global Biennale”.

Golden Bee select committee carried out a titanic selection, following which only the best of the best – about 1300 entries – reached the final exhibition.

Vast majority of contest works is made by posters. Do you still think, poster is dead? But it’s simply the golden age of poster, the best time of its history! Electronic mass media have released poster from rough informative tasks and left for it the “sweetest honey” of visual discoveries, imprinting of deepest meaning, for which there are no words to describe, the pure joy, which arises from plastic, shape and color experiences and which have disappeared long ago from contemporary art. Having become free, poster looks for gaps and “Mariana trenches“ in mind and life, edges, where the culture grows, and fills it with itself. Poster became a new way of compression of emotions, feelings, impressions, sensitive reflection about what is going on in personal and public space.

Besides “Poster” nomination, which is the main part of the exhibition and, of course, the main contest nomination, the biennale program usually includes some additional nominations, covering certain poster topics or various genres of graphic design. “Golden Bee 11” has three nominations of this kind: “Display Types” – a fundamental stratum of our profession, “Ecology” – the topicality of this subject is self-evident and “Faith. Hope. Love”, which continues the line, started at previous biennales by nominations “Graphic Design and Religion” and “The Ten Commandments”.

“Golden Bee” is first of all the highest standards for professionals, it is made for designers and by designers. However the visuality of today is generally the dominating mode of the present. Visual images pervasively impact our everyday life. So graphic design takes on a dimension not only for experts, but for general public too. That’s why the current biennale makes some moves towards the public, intentionally accentuating certain sides of design creativity, revealing some aspects of poster language, introducing world’s leading poster schools and actual subjects.

The basic exposition of biennale includes parts as follows: “Type is the stuff of life”, “The Black-The White”, “The Red and The Black”, “Color and Light in Poster”, “Digital Effects”, “Typographic in Poster”, “Poster with a Capital P”, “Illustration in Poster”, “Photography in Poster”, “The Whole World in Poster”, “Polish Poster School”, “Swiss Poster School”, “German Poster School”, “French Poster School”, “American Poster School”, “Iranian Poster School”, “Chinese Poster School”, “Japanese Poster School”, “Russian Poster School”, “Ukrainian Poster School”, “World War I”, “Zdanevich 120”, “Majakovsky 120” , “Poster Diary”, “Bach! Bach!”, “Zajazyk”, “Grand Prix 2012”, “Ecology” , “Faith. Hope. Love”.

The basic exposition also shows the project «Underground Images. The School of Visual Art. Posters in New-York City Subway. 1947-2014» – a retrospective exhibition of the legendary design school teachers – international design stars – who for decades created posters, that have became a daily reminder of the magic power of art, an appeal for thinking dimensioned, for not being afraid of risks and for not stopping to learn, and who transformed the subway into a true school of creativity and visual culture for the whole city. Special guest of biennale, Chief Communication Officer of School of Visual Art Michael Grant makes an exhibition presentation at the biennale.

Special biennale project “All Gold of the World 2012-2014” – an exhibition of posters, awarded in the main professional competitions – is the continuation of the previous projects series. At each exhibition the International Biennales Coordinating Committee IBCC awarded the competitors with its diploma, and the Biennale Committee conferred a symbolic award – “GoldenBeeLoved”. At the current exhibition there will be a new award “GoldenFix”, which will be conferred by the international jury of “Golden Bee 11” biennale.

“Golden Bee 11” jury members are international design stars Reza Abedini (Iran), Jonathan Barnbrook (United Kingdom), Eric Belousov (Russia), Mirko Ilic (USA), Lech Majewski (Poland), Guta Moura Guedes (Portugal). The works of them will be presented at the Centre for Creative Industries “Fabrika”, exhibition curator is Sofja Pachareva. In addition jury members give lectures and workshops in the Central House of Artist.

With faith, hope and love “Golden Bee” thanks every well-wisher, assistant, tutor and partner of it. Permanent support from professional design community is the main resources of the biennale.
